Chinese Jade Bi Disc and Blade Group
20th century AD or earlier. A group of two jade items comprising: a disk with circular piercing and tapering thickness; a tapering blade with small circular piercing at one end. 423 grams total, 10-19cm (4 - 7 1/2"). Property of a London doctor; previously in the collection of her husband by inheritance; formerly acquired during travels in the Far East during the 1920s. The purpose of jade 'bi' disks is unknown, although they likely served a ceremonial or protective function. They have been found in large quantities in burials of the Liangzhu culture, c. 2500 BC.
