Chinese Jade Cup with Handle, Ming Dynasty

[ translate ]

A Chinese jade carved cup dating from the Ming dynasty. The cup is carved with a ring and stylized beast for the handle, while the top band of the cup features taotie masks, the middle band depicts 2 beasts chasing a swirling ball, and the bottom band depicts banana leaves and beast heads. There is a 4-character mark carved on the bottom.

Dimensions are: 3 1/2 inches tall X 4 1/4 inches wide. All measurements are approximate.

Condition: It is in good condition with 1 miniscule chip in the top rim.

Provenance: From Dr. Kuo in Chicago, by descent from his father-in-law (Shen Zhongtao, 1892-1980), writer of the "Hua Ying Yi Jing" and "Yi Gua and Science," who collected books in China prior to 1949, using the money he earned working in the Commercial Press, Qiming Bookstore in Shanghai. In December 1980, he donated many of his books to the National Palace Museum in Taiwan, for which he was honored by Mr. Chiang Ching-kuo, eldest son of Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek, who personally composed the epitaph for Mr. Shen's tombstone.來自芝加哥郭先生收藏,其岳父沈仲濤(1892 - 1980)為現代藏書家。號研易樓主人。浙江山陰(今紹興)人。早年在上海經商,後在商務印書館、啟明書局供職數年,後經商,以其盈利購書收藏。 1980年12月所藏書捐給台灣故宮博物院,為此,在他逝世後,蔣經國先生親筆題寫墓碑,以示表彰。著《華英易經》、《易卦與科學》等。
