Chinese Ming Dynasty Bronze, Iron, & Wood Mace

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A heavy mace featuring a segmented bronze striking section with a short spike at its apex, an iron shaft and disc-shaped guard, and a wood grip. This style of mace is known as a "Suan To Gu Duo" literally a "garlic mace" named for the shape of its head, according to the "Wubei Zhi", "Treatise on Armament Technology or Records of Armaments and Military Provisions", compiled by Mao Yuanyi in 1621. Size: 4.4" W x 20.75" H (11.2 cm x 52.7 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in April 2007; ex-East Australian Trading Consolidated, Guy Earl-Smith collection, Sydney, Australia
