Chinese Ming Dynasty Glazed Pottery Female Head

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A hollow-molded pottery head of a female, perhaps from a tomb guardian figure known as a mingqi. The face bears high brows, full lips, tab-shaped ears, and a neat hairline, and her coiffure is shaped into a pair of spherical bulbs with a petite central flower on the front. Layers of white and grey pigment accentuate her feminine countenance, and brown and green glaze envelop her coiffure and floral ornament. Size: 2.4" W x 3.4" H (6.1 cm x 8.6 cm); 5.7" H (14.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Honolulu, Hawaii, USA collection, purchased in 2008; ex-Anchor House Antiques, Harry Mura, Honolulu, USA

Nicks and abrasions to neckline, face, ears, and coiffure, with fading to original glaze color, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and great remains of original glaze and facial pigments.
