Chinese Neolithic Majiayao Pottery Vessel

East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, Majiayao culture, ca. 3300 to 2000 BCE. A hand-built pottery vessel of a broad form with a slightly concave base, an inverted apple-shaped body with a gently rounded shoulder, a squat neck, and a pair of loop handles connecting rim and shoulder. Most of the body features a red-orange slip atop which linear motifs are painted in dark red pigment. The Majiayao culture was comprised of a group of Neolithic communities who lived primarily in the upper Yellow River region in eastern Gansu, eastern Qinghai, and northern Sichuan, China. The Majiayao culture represents the first time that the Upper Yellow River region was widely occupied by agricultural communities, and it is famous for its painted pottery. Size: 7" W x 5.9" H (17.8 cm x 15 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, acquired before 2013 from various auction houses in London, UK and New York, USA

Condition Report: Minor nicks and abrasions to base, body, handles, and rim, with fading to original pigment, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits and light remains of original pigment throughout.
