Chinese Neolithic Pottery Jar Geometric Motif

East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, Majiayao culture, ca. 3300 to 2000 BCE A stunning pottery vessel of sizable form decorated with a complex brown and russet painted geometric motif of circles, triangles, waves, and zigzags on a creamy tan ground. The ancient vessel is fit with a flared, circular rim, a broad neck, a sloped shoulder, and a voluminous body that tapers to its annular base. Two small, lugged handles are set mid-body. The Majiayao culture was comprised of a group of Neolithic communities who lived primarily in the upper Yellow River region in eastern Gansu, eastern Qinghai, and northern Sichuan, China. The Majiayao culture represents the first time that the Upper Yellow River region was widely occupied by agricultural communities, and it is famous for its painted pottery. Condition Report: Missing base. Paint reapplied in modern times, but some original paint can be seen beneath new paint. Repaired from several pieces with restoration over break lines and one handle restored from new material. Chip to rim. Expected surface wear with nicks, scratches, and abrasions in some areas commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with lovely earthen deposits throughout.
