Chinese Neolithic Pottery Vessel w/ Handles
East Asia, China, ca. 2300 to 2000 BCE. An attractive Chinese Neolithic Period terracotta vessel dating to the Machang Phase of the Majiayao culture possessing a squat rounded body with a gently flared neck rising to an everted rim, a small knob on opposite sides of the shoulder, and twin strap handles bridging rim to shoulder. Constructed from orange buff earthenware, the jar is decorated with black pigment applied in linear and zigzag motifs on the exterior, frets on the rim, a running diamond pattern on the interior of the neck, and an "X" on the tondo. Size: 5.25" W handlespan x 3.25" H (13.3 cm x 8.3 cm)
