Chinese Neolithic Yangshao Bichrome Pottery Urn

Ancient East Asia, China, Yangshao culture, Neolithic Period, ca. 3000 to 2000 BCE. A hand-built pottery urn of a hefty form with a planar base, an inverted piriform body with a rounded shoulder, a pair of applied loop handles, a wide neck, and a flared rim. The vessel is first covered in orange-hued slip and then painted with dark pigments to form a repeating register of oscillating bands on the body as well as a register of zigzags along the neck. This piece is from the very early pottery tradition found at various archaeological sites along the Yellow River Basin (modern day Gansu Province in northwestern China to Henan Province in central China) from the culture known as the Yangshao. Intended to serve as an urn for a cremation burial, only a limited number have been found from this culture. Size: 12.1" W x 13.6" H (30.7 cm x 34.5 cm)

Condition Report: Chips to two areas of rim as shown. Nicks, abrasions, and light pitting to base, body, handles, and rim, with fading to areas of original pigmentation, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and great pigmentation remains throughout. Old inventory label beneath base.
