The "Himalaya" was ordered in 1851 by the Peninsular and Orient Navigation Company as an iron paddle steamer, but was converted to a screw propulsion vessel while still in the shipyard. Launched in 1853 with a length of 339 feet, a beam of 46 feet, and a displacement of 4690 tons, she was the largest steamship afloat at that time. In 1854 she was purchased by the Royal Navy as a troop ship, in which capacity she served for four decades.

Condition Report: Wax relined. Large (2 x 3 inches) repaired H-shaped tear along the upper right edge. There is a line of restoration running parallel to and roughly 1/2 inch below the upper margin. Several other repaired tears; scattered touches of restoration in the sky and on the sails.
