Chinese Sui Dynasty Glazed Figure - Standing Guardian

[ translate ]

East Asia, China, Sui Dynasty, ca. 581 to 618 CE. A mold-made glazed pottery figure created to be placed in a tomb. The figure is a soldier, wearing a distinctive protective covering over the head that hangs over the shoulders, a belted tunic, and long trousers that touch the feet. He stands on an integrated disc-shaped platform. At his chest, he holds his hands together, with a slot visible in the upper one where he probably once held a staff or some other type of weapon. The remains of glaze are visible on the surface, and the figure would have been brightly colored. Size: 2.2" W x 7.9" H (5.6 cm x 20.1 cm); 8.75" H (22.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-William Froelich collection, New York, USA, collected in the 1970s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#146869
Condition Report: Lower legs are restored with new clay. Otherwise the figure is original, with wear to the glaze and light deposits. Whatever was held in the hands is missing, and one of the hands is also lost. Repaired at neck. Weathered surface with nice deposits and some remaining glaze. Nice preservation of form.
