LOT 0074

Chinese Tang Dynasty Terracotta Tomb Attendant

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $250**

East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A beautifully formed terracotta tomb attendant, a noblewoman. She wears long robes and stands with her hands folded in front of her. On her head is a tall headdress or coiffure. Sadly her face is no longer visible, but she would originally have been brightly painted with mineral pigments to give her individualized facial features. Hundreds of pottery figures like this one were carefully placed in the tombs of high-ranking people during the Tang period; one of the most interesting things about them is that, with their added pigment, they often seem to represent individuals rather than having been mass produced. Size: 2.1" W x 9.55" H (5.3 cm x 24.3 cm)

Provenance: private Ventura County, California, USA collection, acquired in the 1980s to 1990s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#143918
Condition Report: Repaired from three or four pieces, with a loss from one shoulder. Surface wear commensurate with age and extensive deposits on surface, with some small areas of remaining pigment. Form is very clear.
