Chinese Tang Gilded Bronze Buddha, ex- Sotheby's
East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 906 CE. A gilt leaded bronze buddha seated in rajalilasana on a throne above the foliated Bodhi tree. Rajalilasana (also lalitasana) is a pose or mudra that is also called the pose of royal ease. It is a relaxed pose in which the figure sits upon a throne with one leg tucked inwards on the seat while the other leg hangs down to touch the ground or rest on a support (often a stylized throne as we see here). The Buddha wears a dhoti, holds an object in his raised right hand, and rests his left hand upon his knee. The entire form is supported by an integral four-legged rectangular stand, and there is an integral loop behind the Buddha's back for suspension or attachment. Size: 4.75" H (12.1 cm)
Provenance: ex-Sotheby's London, December 1988 as per consignor
