Chinese Wei Dynasty Alabaster Seated Buddha
East Asia, China, Eastern Wei Dynasty, ca. 386 to 535 CE. A stunning sculpture of a seated Buddha hand-carved from creamy beige-hued alabaster. The tranquil figure is seated on a tree stump with his bare right foot resting flat on a stone, while his left leg is drawn up and held by his right hand with his ankle placed on his knee. Draped in robes, the serene deity's left elbow balances on a ball on his knee as he raises a single finger to his face. His slender body features broad, square shoulders, thick arms, and a strong chest. Gazing forward from slender almond-shaped eyes, his serene visage displays petite, bowed lips held closed, a flat nose, and arched brows. A flat-topped, cylindrical headdress with a long back lappet caps his calm countenance, and is finely incised with a triangular motif. His head is elegantly framed by a large disk that serves as a type of crown or halo. Seven vertical lines of Chinese text are inscribed on the base. Size: 5.75" W x 11.25" H (14.6 cm x 28.6 cm)
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Spinks Collection, London, UK; ex-Earl Stendahl Collection; ex-Alfred Stendahl Collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, collected 1950 to 1960
