Chinese White Jade Carving of a Fish, Ming

明代 白玉鳜魚擺件 A Chinese white jade carved fish carrying lotuses in its mouth with a hardwood stand inlaid with silver wire and dating from the Ming dynasty.

Dimensions are: the fish measures 4 inches tall X 8 1/2 inches wide. All measurements are approximate.

Condition: It is in good condition.

Provenance: From Mr. Chun in Northern California. These items were from Mr. Chun's grandfather who was the owner of Chang Mao Yang Hang bank in Shanghai's British concession in the early 1900s. A smaller scale white jade fish can be found at the Beijing Palace Museum (Fig.1). A similar set of examples with hardwood stands were sold at Christie's London May 16, 2012 lot 553. Another Qing dynasty example was sold at Christie's Hong Kong November 26, 2014 lot 3347. Boldly carved in the form of a carp fish, with puckered lips grasping a long, curling stem from which issue lotus buds, and pads nestling against their bodies. The bodies of the fish are outlined by tall, serrated dorsal fins and lobed, serrated tails, all supported on tempestuous waves.
