Watercolour on silk. It shows a small image of a forest, where there are beautiful orange flowers on a faint green, which attract a swarm of beautiful and delicate butterflies of different sizes and colours. On the right side, slightly below, we find an inscription of the author and her two seals. Lu Xiaoman (陆小曼) was a beloved cultural figure in 20th century Chinese history. She was given the name Mei, but later changed her name to Lu Xiaoman. Although she was well known for her public and passionate relationship with Xu Zhimo, she was a celebrated painter, writer, singer and actress (November 7, 1903 - April 3, 1965), 20th century.
