Chiribaya / Tiahuanaco Polychrome Cup w/ Rattle Base

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Western Bolivia, Chiribaya or Tiahuanaco (Tiwanaku) culture, ca. 900 to 1200 CE. A hand-built pottery cup with a knob-shaped base which prohibits it from being set down. The conical vessel is covered in orange-red slip, atop which is an exterior decorative program of abstract linear and geometric motifs in hues of red, teal, and black. A hollow cavity just above the base holds several small rattle balls which make a raspy sound when jostled. Lucite stand for photography purposes only. Size: 3" W x 4.375" H (7.6 cm x 11.1 cm).

Provenance: Estate of R. Pearson, Denver, Colorado, USA; Mr. Pearson collected from the third quarter of the 20th century until he passed away.
