Choice Silver Didrachm from Caria - Pixodaros

Asia Minor, Caria, Satraps of Pixodaros, 340 BCE to 334 BCE. OBVERSE: Laureated head of Apollo facing slightly right. REVERSE: Zeus Labraundos to right with double axe. Greek inscription to right. This important and beautiful coin features a beautifully stylized portrait of Apollo, the Roman god often associated with medicine and healing. The reverse side has a standing Zeus Labraundos depicted holding a double axe. This happens to be an excellent example of some of the finest of Classical Greek die mastery. Compare SNG von Aulock 2375–2376; SNG Kayhan 891–892. Size: 7.10 grams, 19 mm.
