Chondzoresk
late 19th century, 228 x 124 cm, South Caucasus, Karabagh
The red field is entirely taken up by two large octagonal medallions in which eight red or white S-shaped figures appear to circle around a central yellow rectangle. These designs are usually described as cloudbands (the origin of the name "Cloudband Kazak"), but they could just as well represent dragons or snakes. A number of blossoms, hooked diamonds and animals are casually distributed across the field ground. The yellow horizontal panels at the upper and lower ends of the field are a rare feature.
Condition
Slight signs of age and wear as well as some repairs. Lower finish slightly reduced.
