In exchange for the valuable Japanese ceramics which the Dutch traders from the 16th century brought back to the Netherlands in great quantities, they gave the Shogun a ceremonial gift of Dutch linen fabric. Christien Meindertsma used this idea to design 'Porcelain & Linen', which celebrates this historic relationship. Meindertsma created models of cups, plates and bowls using linen cloth, which were subsequently reconstructed in ceramic shape.
