Christine Kuhlenthal Nash (1895-1976) and John Northcote Nash (1893-1977) a rare 1927 sketch book, the blue cloth bound book 26 x 20cm, inscribed to end board Christine Nash, June 1927, housing 41 pages of sketches in pencil and sometimes coloured pencils, some titled, the majority apparently by Christine including landscapes, cat studies and others, but also botanical studies and cartoon figures probably by John. Provenance: A fine private collection of pictures and ephemera relating to John and Christine Nash and their circle. By family descent from Pam and David Maresco Pearce. The couple moved to The Old Vicarage in Wormingford in 1956 when engineer David began working at Paxmans in Colchester. Pam began creating enamelled jewellery with the help of her husband and together they opened Traders in St John’s Street Colchester, selling contemporary art and design and decorative interiors. They moved in artistic circles and became firm friends with John and Christine Nash, their near neighbours in Wormingford. By coincidence David’s father Charles had been a good friend and early patron of John’s brother Paul. This collection is by family descent and represents a significant cache of previously unseen and undocumented material, of particular importance with reference to Christine Nash (nee. Kuhlenthal) who showed outstanding promise during her student days at the Slade School, but who’s artistic career became overshadowed by that of her husband, and whose work is now very scarce and rarely seen at auction.
