(*) Christo Vladimirov Javacheff was born in 1935 in Babrovo (Bulgaria) . He studied fine arts in Sofia between 1952 and 1956. Christo settled in Paris in 1958 and met Jeanne-Claude de Guillebon, born the same year as him. They get married and decide to unite their talents as creators. The first exhibition of both artists was organized in 1961. This same year they created packaging in the port of Cologne. The following year, as a protest against the Berlin Wall, they carried out a gigantic assembly in Paris, on Visconti Street, stacking barrels of oil and gasoline. This period is the starting point of thousands of proposals among which numerous creations, poetic and gigantic packaging projects that want to manifest the ephemeral as artistic expression.
The couple settled in New York in 1964 and Christo and Jeanne-Claude became American citizens. They take over space, wrap, cut out, color, monuments and landscapes giving the urban, rural or maritime landscapes of their choice a new sculptural dimension (Valley Curtain, Running Fence, Surrounded Islands, Biscayne Bay, Pont Neuf in Paris, Reischtag in Berlin…) .
Christo and Jeanne-Claude are distinguished by the fact that they defend their projects themselves, producing them with their own means. For each of them they execute preparatory drawings, graphic works (lithographs and serigraphs) , collages, models and films whose sale finances the project itself. “The Gates,” his latest production, was presented in New York in early 2005. It is a 37-kilometer route through Central Park dotted with 7,500 gates wrapped in saffron-colored fabrics. His next film is titled “Above the Arkansas River”; will be installed in Colorado.
Christo passed away at the age of eighty-four, on May 31, 2020.
