Cibvil War US 1840s Eagle Pommel American Officer Sword

Estimate 1820-1840 Ornately carved one-piece bone grip with gilt bronze stylized knuckle bow with screaming eagle open beak pommel, ending in a plain back strap. The open beak is gripping an oval wreath at the top end of the knuckle bow. Ferrule has a bead design flanked by a circle design. Languets contain spread wing Federal Eagle facing proper right with a US shield on the chest. Clamshell quillion. Maker's mark of "W" under the obverse languet. Single edged 1" wide blade with side fuller is 31-3/8" long with acid etched and blued vine and panoply of arms designs. Overall 36-1/8" long. No scabbard.-RH Bezdek "American Swords & Sword Makers, Vol II", p278. CONDITION: Good. Blade is smooth metal, but grey above the blue panels with some darker grey spots. Brass scabbard matches patina of hilt.
