Cihanbeyli
first half 19th century, 156 x 111 cm, Central Anatolia, Konya
This rare rug is a Kurdish piece from Cihanbeyli, a town some 100 kilometres north of Konya. A rust-red, hexagonal shield medallion with stepped sides floats freely in the centre of the white field. A box motif topped by a gable composed of green lines is surrounded by small stars and diamonds. The same stars and diamonds, as well as four serrated leaves and small amulets, are spaciously distributed across the field. The aubergine-ground main border shows the box motif as the primary design, where it appears in diverse colours and alternates with small cruciforms.
Condition
Slight signs of age and wear and some restorations in the red-brown field. Lower kilim finish rewoven in places.
