Circle of ANDREA DI LIONE (Naples, 1610 - 1685). "Pastoral scene". Oil on canvas. Relined Period frame.

Circle of ANDREA DI LIONE (Naples, 1610 - 1685).
"Pastoral scene".
Oil on canvas. Relined Period frame.
Size: 62 x 73 cm; 78 x 89 cm (frame).
The dated works of this artist are scarce, so only through the different modern attributions it has been possible to configure his personality. He trained with the late Mannerist painter Belisario Corenzio, although he soon joined the workshop of Aniello Falcone, an artist known for his famous recreations of battles. It was in this genre that Lione achieved a greater similarity with his master. But, in addition, he was able to enrich his painting with Poussinian classicism and the neo-Venetianism then prevailing, until he developed his own personality, reflected in a great pictorial freedom. In this way he would create a series of landscapes of a refined classicist sense. The Prado Museum is one of the institutions where the best examples of his art can be found. There are up to four works by Lione in the Madrid art gallery. Some of them are part of the series of commissions to Neapolitan painters for the decoration of the Buen Retiro Palace, although it is also known that at least one of his canvases was in the Alcázar of Madrid before the fire of 1734.
