Circle of Adriaen Hanneman, Dutch c.1601-1671- Portrait of a young gentleman, half-length, turned to the left in a black cloak and clerical collar, in a feigned oval, c.1650s; oil on canvas, 76 x 57.5 cm. Note: On stylistic grounds the present portrait is closely associated with the work of Adriaen Hanneman, a highly regarded Dutch Golden Age portraitist who was renowned for depicting the Dutch nobility and exiles of the British royal court after the English Civil War. Having worked under Daniël Mijtens, then probably Anthony van Dyck, during a 16 year stint in England, Hanneman returned to the Hague in 1638 and went on to co-found the 'Confrerie Pictura' in 1656. Based on the sitter's costume and hairstyle, the present work is likely to have been executed in around the 1650s.
