Circle of Antonio Campi,
Italian 1523-1587-

The Holy Family;

pen, brown ink and wash heightened with white on paper (with made up areas), bears inscription and number 'No. 102 / Cam. procacini Luciano P...' (on an old backing sheet verso), 18.6 x 16.8 cm., (unframed).

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 3 July 1990, lot 25 (as Antonio Campi).
with Hill-Stone, USA.; Private Collection.

Note:
The present work last went through sale in 1990 as by Antonio Campi, an attribution that was proposed by Philip Pouncey, CBE, FBA. While that attribution is now in doubt, the drawing certainly points to a draughtsman (possibly Nordic) working in Northern Italy around the middle of the 16th century.
