Circle of Giacomo Francesco Cipper, 18th century

[ translate ]

DESCRIPTION

Circle of GIACOMO FRANCESCO CIPPER "TODESCHINI"(Feldkirch, 1664-Milan, after 1747)
"Peasant girl with duck and flute player".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
It shows repainting and restorations.
It preserves a repainted frame of the period.
Measurements: 73,5 x 58,5 cm (x2): 84 x 69 cm (frames, x2).
Pair of portraits of tenebrist aesthetics, which despite their differences present a similar composition and theme. In both cases the work features a single figure in the centre of the composition, portrayed bust-length against a neutral background of ochre and black tones. In one of the works the artist rescues the image of a young woman, who is turned in three quarters, directing her penetrating gaze at the viewer, while holding a duck in her arms. The other piece features a young man playing a flute. Both figures seem to belong to the lower social classes, as their clothes are in rags. Costumbrismo is a genre in which popular types and attitudes, behaviour, values and habits common to a specific group of the population, region or class are described by means of a satirical, nostalgic or narrative description of the environments, customs, clothing, festivals and entertainments, traditions, trades and representative types of a society. The idea of costumbrismo arose from an attempt to understand reality, or more precisely, reality understood in a particular way, from a specific point of view.
In terms of their technical characteristics, both portraits belong to the artistic circle of Todeschini, whose painting reflects his interest in depicting these popular types. Of Austrian origin, Cipper worked in Milan in the first half of the 18th century. A highly productive landscape painter in the Caravaggesque manner, his first attributed work is dated 1700; he worked in Lombardy and the Veneto (see, for example, his Hunters and Greengrocers in the Galleria Campori, Modena, and his Family of Peasants in Venice in the Gallerie dell'Accademia). Subsequently, the artist, perhaps under the influence of Giacomo Ceruti (some of whose works are attributed to him), moved away from the scrupulous observation of detail, replacing it with a less representational vision, more sensitive to the play of light. His last known work is Self-portrait (1736), now at Hampton Court Palace.
