Circle of Jakob Bogdány Still life with a monkey on...

[ translate ]

The Property of the Marquess of Anglesey from the Private Apartment at Plas Newydd

Circle of Jakob Bogdány
Still life with a monkey on a table laden with grapes, peaches and figs

oil on canvas
unframed: 50.8 x 124.2 cm.; 20 x 48⅞ in.
framed: 62.9 x 136.2 cm.; 24¾ x 53⅝ in.

Condition Report:
The canvas appears to be lined. The stretcher bars look fairly modern and have therefore likely been replaced. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and relatively even. A horizontal line running across the centre of the canvas can be noticed in raking light: this may relate to a join in the canvas, or evidence an old fold. A couple of small losses to the paint surface can be noted close to the left margin, along the top margin, close to the right margin, and over a leaf to the left of the yellow flowers on the right hand-side, but these are all minute in size, measuring a couple of millimetres each. Networks of craquelure can be found throughout the composition, particularly over the monkey’s body, though these appear to be settled. A couple of spots of retouching are visible to the naked eye: these can be found primarily on the table corner lower left, above the monkey’s left shoulder, in the background above the bunch of grapes to the animal’s right, and on the face of some of the peaches lower centre. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these as retouchings, while revealing a few others on the pomegranate held by the monkey, as strengthening on the stalks of the leaves clustered above the peaches, in the bunch of green grapes beneath them, and in the lower right corner. Overall, the painting is in good condition. It presents well and is ready to hang.
