Circle of Joseph Highmore, British 1692-1780- Portrait of a Shepherdess; oil on canvas, 127 x 101.5 cm., (unframed). Note: In the early 18th Century, visions of the English countryside were presented in increasingly romanticised forms. The present work, which depicts a noble woman in the guise of a shepherdess, subscribes to this very Arcadian ideal. A larger canvas by Highmore, depicting 'Peg Woffington' as shepherdess and housed in the Hill of Tarvit Mansionhouse (National Trust for Scotland no.49.479), bears a similar composition to the present work.
