Circle of Lelio Orsi, called Lelio da Novellara, Italian c.1511-1587- Venus and Cupid; oil on canvas, 36.5x26.5cm (VAT charged on hammer price) Provenance: Sotheby’s London, 28th October 2010, lot 77; Sotheby’s London, November 1st, 2001, lot 22 Note: In 1554, Orsi spent a year in Rome, where he learned the principles of Michelangelo's Mannerism. After this, he focussed on making easel paintings of mostly religious and mythological subjects, such as this piece.
