Anne Smith was the daughter of Sir Thomas Strickland, 2nd Baronet of Boynton Hall, East Yorkshire. She was raised in Beverley where he father was the Member of Parliament. In 1683 she married the Rt Hon. John Smith (1656-1723) of Tedworth House, Hampshire who was the Speaker of the House of Commons and served twice as Chancellor of the Exchequer. John Smith's portrait was painted by Sir Godfrey Kneller in 1707/8.
