Circle of Pierre Louis Dumesnil, French 1698-1781- An Interior with an elegant lady, her spaniel, and a maid beside a hearth; oil on panel, inscribed 'f...B' (on the lintel, centre left), 33.2 x 26.8 cm. Provenance: The Collection of Giancarlo Baroni, Florence.; Estate of Giancarlo Baroni sale, Sotheby's, New York, 29-30 January 2013, lot 475. Note: This French domestic scene bears thematic, stylistic, and compositional parallels to works by both Pierre Louis Dumesnil and Gabriel de Saint-Aubin (1724-1780). See for example, Dumesnil's 'Card Players in a Drawing Room' held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York [1976.100.8] and de Saint-Aubin's interior scene sold at Sotheby's, New York, 28 January 1999, lot 289. In the present work, the artist conjures a similarly convivial interior scene, and adopts, too, a loose, painterly technique, rendering the fabrics with broad strokes and highlighting the folds with swift white marks. We are grateful to Alistair Laing for highlighting the similarities between the present work and those by Dumesnil.
