Circle of Salvator Rosa, Italian 1615-1673- A wooded river landscape with figures; oil on canvas, 38.5 x 49.8 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 21 January 1977, lot 130 (as 'ROSA'). Note: The present work is highly reminiscent of the romantic landscapes of Salvator Rosa, particularly in its dark and untamed setting, and in the prevailing sentiment of the 'sublime', which is similarly conjured up by the present work. Rosa's paintings were the very antithesis of those 'picturesque' and classical views produced by Claude Lorrain (1600-1682) and his circle.
