Circle of Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA, British 1769-1830- Portrait of a gentleman, head and shoulders; oil on canvas, 61x51cm Provenance: Private collection; gifted to the present owner in 2019 Note: Although Sir Thomas Lawrence left behind numerous unfinished portraits upon his death similar in format to the painting on offer, this work seems to be more closely connected to the style of his assistant John Philip Simpson (1782-1847) and the artist Stephen Poyntz Denning (1795-1864). Based on the hair and dress of the sitter, this portrait can be dated to around 1830. Lawrence was made a Royal Academician in 1794, later becoming President in 1820. He was considered the most fashionable portrait painter of the age, with his sitters including the most notable members of society and Royalty of Europe.
