The sitter (c.1677-1767) was the second son of Sir John Hoskyns, 2nd bt, and Jane Lowe of Harewood Park, Herefordshire. in 1716 he married Mary, daughter of Theophilus Leigh of Adlestrop, who was a niece of James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos.
