Circle of Willem Van de Velde the Younger, Dutch 1633-1707- Dutch coastal vessels in choppy waters; oil on canvas, 50.8 x 60.6 cm. (VAT charged on hammer price). Note: The subject of the present work is two Dutch frigates sailing in choppy waters, most likely off the coast of Holland. Van de Velde the Younger was celebrated for his highly detailed and accurate depictions of sailing vessels, and his later works, particularly, influenced the development of marine painting in England from the late 17th Century onwards. The present composition, clearly conceived with Van de Velde’s works in mind, presents a fine seascape with particular attention to the atmospheric sea and sky, and with the wind-filled sails and smoke from the just-fired canons adding to its overall drama.
