Circle of William Hogarth FRSA, British 1697-1764- Portrait of a lady, half-length, turned to the left wearing a brown dress with white scarf and a broad brimmed hat, within partial feigned oval; oil on canvas, 63.7 x 53.5 cm. Note: Hogarth’s portraits of the 1740s of the more elevated classes reveal general similarities to the present work, in respect of the ¾ length format, the angle at which the sitter is posed, the feigned oval, and the colour palette – see, for example, his portrait of Mrs Salter in the Tate Britain, London [NO1663]. The subject, here, however would appear to resonate more with those in the ‘Heads of Six of Hogarth’s Servants’, housed in the Tate Britain, London [NO1374], or perhaps ‘The Shrimp Girl’ (National Gallery, London [NG1162]), in certain respects.
