Cisalpine Republic Silver Scudo / 6 Lire
ITALIAN STATES. CISALPINE REPUBLIC. 1797-1802.
Silver Scudo/ 6 Lire, 1800. Milan.
Obv: ALLA NAZ·FRAN·LA REP·CISAL·RICONOSCENTE, a female figure, an allegory of the Cisalpine Republic, pays tribute to the seated France, legend around. Rev. Value and date in four lines within oak wreath.
Issued following the restoration of the Cisalpine Republic after Napoleon’s victory at Marengo in June 1800. The republic had collapsed during the Austrian advance of 1799; its return depended on renewed French military success. The inscription ALLA NAZIONE FRANCESE LA REPUBBLICA CISALPINA RICONOSCENTE - “The Cisalpine Republic, grateful to the French nation” - makes that dependence explicit.
The reverse dates the issue to 27 Prairial, Year VIII, using the French Revolutionary calendar, and commemorates the settlement at Alessandria following Marengo. Its allegorical design gives the coin a medallic character.
Of bright appearance, sharp, better than extremely fine, very rare.
