Civil War Albumen Photograph of Major General John G. Parke and Staff, Incl. Lt. Colonel James Lyman Van Buren
Albumen photograph, 12.75 x 15 in. (sight), framed, 15.25 x 17.5 in. An uncredited studio portrait featuring Major General John G. Parke seated at center, flanked by members of his staff and one gentleman in civilian dress. Lieutenant Colonel James Lyman Van Buren is seated at far right.
John G. Parke (1827-1900) was an engineer and surveyor who was made a brigadier general of volunteers in 1861 and given command of a brigade under Ambrose Burnside. Promoted to major general in August 1862, he served as Burnside's chief of staff in both 1862 and 1864, and replaced Burnside when he was relieved of command after the Battle of Crater. Following the war, Parke remained in the engineer corps and was superintendent of the USMA from 1887-1889.
James Lyman Van Buren (1837-1866) was a cousin of President Martin Van Buren. Prior to the Civil War, he was a lawyer, but entered the military early in the war as a lieutenant of New York volunteers. Van Buren served as judge-advocate on the staff of Burnside and as military secretary to Governor Edward Stanly. He received the brevet of lieutenant colonel for showing bravery in the East Tennessee campaign and colonel for his service at Knoxville. While with Burnside, he joined Grant's campaign against Richmond. Following the assault on Petersburg, he was breveted brigadier general.
Condition Report: Even toning to print. Few surface smudges. Not examined outside frame. Very fine condition overall. Gilt frame with some surface scratches/nicks.
