Alfred Stratton at the age of 18, enlisted at Ellicott, NY to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. G, 147th New York Infantry on August 19, 1863. He was wounded in action at Petersburg, Virginia losing both arms from solid cannon shot on June 18th of 1864. He received a promotion to 1st Sergeant for humanitarian reasons to maximize his pension and was discharged on September 27, 1864 for disability.
