Civil War CDV's- NY Soldier & Family

Pair of two cartes-de-visite (CDV's) housed within loose album sleeves. Sleeves are pencil inscribed to “S.C. Day – 1862” and “Mrs. S. C. Day & Baby Eddie.” The civilian view is ink-signed on the obverse “Eddie Day & his mother, Sep. 1864” and back marked by Rutherford & Boardman, Seneca Falls, NY. The full standing, uniformed view of Day is back marked by S. J. Fowler, Auburn, NY. Day's portrait shows him wearing a unique tailored jacket with an unusually high number of buttons. His kepi bears French-style braid on the crown and sides, and is adorned on the front with a small artillery badge.

Samuel Clark Day enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant on 4/18/1861 and was commissioned in Battery C, 3rd NY Light Artillery the following month. On 7/30/1863 Day was promoted to captain and transferred to Battery F, where he remained until his discharge for disability on 5/17/1865. The organization was originally raised as a 2-year infantry regiment but converted to artillery throughout late 1861 and 1862. The 3rd NY Light Artillery served with the 18th Corps throughout North and South Carolina.
