Civil War ID Disc-4th Rhode Island Infantry

Civil War identification disc for Private Cornelius Murphy, Company I, 4th Rhode Island Infantry. Disc exhibits obverse of portrait of General George McClellan and surrounding text "MAJOR GENERAL G.B. McCLELLAN, WAR OF 1861". Reverse exhibits stamped lettering "C. MURPHY, CO. I. 4th. REG. R.I.V., PROVIDENCE. R.I." Disc is gilded brass and has been excavated (dug). Lettering is strong and surface of disc exhibits some slight corrosion and gilt loss. Cornelius Murphy enlisted on September 21, 1861 and was mustered in as a private of Company I, 4th Rhode Island Infantry on October 30, 1861. The Civil War database has him being mustered out on October 15, 1864 in Providence, Rhode Island, however Murphy family history volume lists Murphy as dying of disease on September 23, 1864.
