Civil War ID Disc-59th Massachusetts Infantry

Civil War identification disc for Private Benjamin A. Chamberlain, Company G, 59th Massachusetts Infantry. Disc exhibits obverse of portrait of General George Washington and surrounding text "GEORGE WASHINGTON, BORN FEBRUARY 23, 1732". Reverse exhibits stamped lettering "BENJ. CHAMBERLAIN, CO. G 59th MASS REGT, MIDDLEBURY, MASS" Disc is pewter and exhibits significant wear. Lettering is still readable. Benjamin A. Chamberlain enlisted on February 17, 1864 and was mustered in as a private of Company G, 59th Massachusetts Infantry on March 4, 1864. Chamberlain died of disease on December 10, 1864 at Beverly, New Jersey. He is buried in Central Cemetery, Middleborough, Massachusetts. Provenance: Eugene T.
