Civil War Inscribed 19th Corps Silver Badge
Silver corps badge with pin back, inscribed “31st Mass. Mtd. Infty.” The 31st Massachusetts Infantry was organized at Camp Seward, Pittsfield, MA on 12/15/1861 and was sent to the Gulf of Mexico, being the first regiment to enter New Orleans upon it's capture. The regiment was active during the siege of Port Hudson, LA before being armed and equipped as cavalry in December, 1863, then being commonly known as the “6th Massachusetts Cavalry.” Notable later actions of the regiment include Sabine Cross Roads, Yellow Bayou, and Plaquemine. The regiment was mustered out on 9/9/1865 before being transported by boat from New Orleans to Boston Harbor. A rare and desirable corps badge from a distinct mounted infantry regiment.
