Sixth plate melainotype of a seated Civil War infantryman holding the American flag. While flags are commonly seen in period images of soldiers, rarely are subjects actually holding them! Unusual content. The image is delicately tinted green and red in different areas, including the stripes of the flag.

Excellent portrait of a soldier prepared to defend the Union. Image is housed in a full leatherette case. Plate is stamped with Neff's Patent mark, denoting it as a melainotype.
