Classical Mahogany, Mahogany Veneer, and Tiger Maple Serving Table,
New York, New York, c. 1825.
Rectangular mahogany top with crossband-veneered rounded edge over applied cavetto molding across front and returns of case, which contains a tier of split drawers with match-veneered mahogany fronts dovetailed to mahogany frames, above one full drawer constructed with poplar, all set in case framed with crossband-veneered poplar, enclosed at sides with hewn mahogany panels in joined frames and at back with horizontal pine boards, which are gauged on exterior for two pocket screws securing the top to frame, joined at four corners with square stiles featuring inlaid tiger maple panels in crossbanded reserves on the front legs, which continue to ring- and urn-turned legs with spiral-reeded columns, striking in contrast with the similarly turned but smooth rear legs, all blocked to support a single-board mahogany shelf above spindle-turned ball feet, retaining partial label of Sypher & Co., dealers in "Antiques & Articles of Vertu" at 739-741 Broadway, 91cm wide, 48cm deep, 86cm high (36 3/4in wide, 19 1/4in deep, 34 1/2in high).
