Claude-Emile SCHUFFENECKER (1851-1934) "Vagues sur la côte bretonne" With Paul GAUGUIN, Claude-Emile SCHUFFENECKER regularly went to Pont-Aven to paint in the mid-1880s. He will recommend Emile BERNARD to GAUGUIN and will be one of the pillars of this "school". He exhibited at the Salon in 1880 and 1881, before being refused in 1882 and 1883 and participating in the creation of the ‘salon des independants’ the following year. In 1886, he participated in the eighth and final exhibition of the Impressionists in the company of Berthe MORISOT, Edgar DEGAS, Camille PISSARRO. . . His work is marked by various influences: pointillism, symbolism, Gauguin. . . He is also known for possessing works by Van Gogh and Cézanne, which he "improved", this gave him the reputation of forger during the following century before these allegations were denied. Among the many museums that have his works are the Musées des Beaux-Arts of Brest, Quimper, Pont Aven, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. . .
