Claude-Emile Schuffenecker, French 1851-1934- Arbre dans la Neige, circa 1896; pencil and pastel on paper, signed lower right with atelier stamp, 18x12cm Provenance: Private Collection, Holland; Connaught Brown, London, where purchased in 2009; Private Collection, London; thence by descent Note: Similar examples in Claude-Emile Schuffenecker, Catalogue Raisonne I, Jill-Elyse Grossvogel, 2000: pp.6, 11, 46, 51, 57, 150, 191, 192 This piece is by the French Post-Impressionist painter Claude-Emile Schuffenecker. Schuffenecker was friends with artists including Odilon Redon and Paul Gauguin, and was one of the earliest collectors of Vincent Van Gogh’s work. Schuffenecker was heavily influenced by the styles of his contemporaries, meaning that his own work, which is suffused with the artistic approach of these groundbreaking artists, bears witness to his participation in this moment of artistic development which was of such great historical significance. Works by Shuffenecker are in the collections of the Tate Galleries in London, Harvard Art Museums, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.
