Clément Massier - Jérôme Massier Fils - Cache Pot, Column (1) - Victorian Style - Ceramic, Enamel
This four-column support is a testament to the eclecticism in the decorative arts of the late 1800s. Clément Massier (1844-1917) proposes a spectacular model which revives the splendor of Hispano-Moorish pottery. The base formed by four columns, surmounted by pierced capitals, in fact supports a multi-lobed arch which recalls Andalusian palaces with their harmonious and polychrome decorations. The circular cup is decorated on the body with intertwined motifs in relief forming arabesques. Appearing in the sales catalog published at the end of the 19th century for Clément Massier's collections, this model known as the "Alhambra" is among the potter's most ambitious pieces. It is also one of the works that refers most majestically to the Hispano-Moorish style.
