Clément Serveau (1886-1927) is a French painter, draughtsman, engraver, and illustrator. He created models of banknotes, designed and engraved postage stamps. He made his debut in 1905 at the Salon des Indépendants, then at the Salons des Artists Français, Salons d'Automne and the Tuileries. This painting, autographed and signed discreetly on the top left ‘A mon ami Auguste, bien cordialement’ (To my friend Auguste, most sincerely) , December 1910, shows us a young man dressed in dark tones, a dog against him. The animal takes an important place, by the contrast of its white coat which blends in with the clothes and by the framing. This painting is in very good condition, on its original canvas.
